Together We Grow – Ka Tupu Kotāhi ai Tātou- Week 4

Kia ora koutou OVS Whanau and Caregivers,

Firstly welcome back to week 4. We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Labour Day weekend and some well-deserved time out with family and friends.
A very bust week 3 culminated in our super OVS AG DAY and what a great Ag Day it was! The day was filled with smiles, animals, creativity, and community spirit — a real celebration of what makes Ōtaika Valley School special. A huge thank you to all our students for their wonderful efforts in the lead-up to the day, especially those who reared and trained their animals with such care and dedication. A special shout out to our judges – Lyna and Amanda. We appreciate you giving up your time and sharing your expertise.
A big thank you also to our amazing staff — particularly Robyn and Miss Lynch — for their organisation and hard work behind the scenes to make the event run so smoothly. Our PTA did their usual stellar job keeping everyone fed with their delicious food throughout the day — thank you and the hot chips were a huge hit!
We were also lucky to have the Portland Fire Brigade join us with an appliance, adding some wet and wild fun and excitement for the kids, also another shout out to Gareth Bourke for providing the always-popular quad bike rides. And of course, a special mention to all the parents who baked those incredible cake creations — what a display of talent and effort!

Congratulations to all our event winners, and thank you once again to our wonderful parent community for helping and supporting such a special and long-standing tradition in our kura. See below for results from the day.I

Board of Trustees Co-option.

The OVS Board of Trustees would like to welcome Gareth Bourke back to our Board. Gareth has been co-opted back onto the Board with the role of School Property Oversight.

The board would also like to invite our school whanau to review this term’s policies. These are available though SchoolDocs on our website in the ‘Board of Trustees section’. As always we welcome your feedback.

HEALTH REMINDER

Health New Zealand is urging schools and ECEs in Northland to be alert for measles, with an escalating risk across the motu. Given the recent outbreak in Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands, there is a heightened risk of cases occurring within these communities.

Please note the following.

  • Watch out for measles symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash.
  • To keep students home from school if they have any measles symptoms, and to stay home and ring their doctor, or call Healthline for FREE on 0800 611 116.
  • Students who are close contacts of a measles case should stay at home if they are not considered immune. National Public Health Service will check this and advise.
  • Check all whānau are immunised, and encourage them to catch up if not fully immunised or not sure: info.health.nz/measles-immunity.

OVS Attendance Update
Regular student attendance (90%) was down last term with all the winter gremlins but it has been pleasing to see an increase this term.
So…how are we tracking in weeks 1-4 this term.
Weeks 1&2 our Kura attended regularly  66.18%
Weeks 3&4 our Kura attended regularly  68.61%
An improvement, but still work to do!  Attendance = success !!!

   Its Raffle Time!

Our amazing PTA has been busy putting the finishing touches on this year’s raffle — and we’re nearly ready to go! A booklet of 10 tickets will be coming home next week with the eldest child in each family. Extra tickets will be available from the school office.

This fun fundraiser helps support the ongoing development of Ōtaika Valley School’s outdoor environment, creating wonderful spaces for our tamariki to learn and play.

Keep an eye out for the ticket booklet in your child’s backpack! Tickets will be $3 each. All money and tickets (sold and unsold) need to be returned to the school office by December 3rd.

Thank you for your fantastic support — every ticket sold helps make a difference for our school!

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors:

Strike Action

I would also take this opportunity to thank our OVS whanu for your support and understanding during the recent nationwide stop-work action. This is a call from our sector to improve  learning conditions for students. It includes increased support for students in classrooms, better pay and support for teachers, and adequate staffing levels across education. If you would like to further support education in new Zealand there is a petition you can access here. https://action.nzei.org.nz/petitions/back-education-that-works-for-all-tamariki
