Together We Grow – Ka Tupu Kotāhi ai Tātou- Week 9, Term 3

Kia ora e te whānau,

Hello from Jen and Heidi!

Well, the cat’s away and the mice are in charge!  Just kidding. With Rick on a Principal’s tour,  Jen and I are holding down the fort and keeping things running smoothly.

It’s been a hectic but exciting time at school lately.  Our Country and Western Disco was a huge hit!  A massive thank you to our incredible PTA for all their hard work in organizing such a fun night.  The costumes were fantastic and it was great to see everyone out on the dance floor.

Just a quick reminder about those pesky bugs that have been doing the rounds.  Please remember to keep your child at home if they are unwell to help prevent the spread.

Believe it or not, we’re already heading into our final week of Term 3!  This term has flown by, and it’s a good time to remind everyone to stay safe and have fun over the upcoming holidays.

We’ve got an action-packed final week planned, and we can’t wait to share more with you all soon.

Listed below are our candidates – each bringing valuable skills, perspectives and experiences.  Your vote is important and helps shape the direction of our school/community.

Melissa Russell

My name is Melissa Russell, and I’m honoured to be standing again for the Ōtaika Valley School Board of Trustees. While I work as a barrister in our family’s law firm, my most important role has been as a mum to three wonderful sons — all of whom have been lucky enough to grow and learn at our amazing kura.

I have proudly served on the Board, as the Chairperson (Presiding Member) for the past six years . Over this time, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible things we can achieve when our board, staff, and community work together with our students at the heart of every decision.

In just the past 2.5 years, we’ve welcomed a new principal, overseen seven property projects, supported the introduction of the new curriculum, strengthened our financial position, and successfully negotiated with the Ministry of Education to extend our school from Year 1–6 to now include Year 7 & 8.

I am deeply committed to ensuring our kura continues to thrive — not only in providing high-quality learning opportunities, but also in nurturing the wellbeing, confidence, and potential of every student. If re-elected, I will keep working to strengthen our school, support our dedicated staff, and ensure ŌVS remains a place where every child feels valued, challenged, and inspired.

Thank you for taking the time to consider re-electing me as a trustee.

Ngā mihi nui,
Melissa Russell

Holly Robinson

I am eager to bring my expertise in marketing, stakeholder management, and leadership to the Ōtaika Valley School board. With a strong professional background working with both corporate and not-for-profit entities, I specialise in developing long-term strategic directions through various initiatives and channels that connect strategic goals with target audiences.

My skills in analysing and interpreting demographic data will allow me to support targeted initiatives that effectively engage families, educators, and local community members. This approach will help to foster stronger relationships and collaboration within the school board, ultimately benefiting our children and the entire school community.

Having previously served as a trustee for The Vegan Society of Aotearoa, I have valuable experience in governance, as well as decision-making regarding policies, programmes, and stakeholders. I am experienced in navigating complex discussions while adhering to governing principles, ensuring policies reflect both legal obligations and the values of the community.

As an experienced team leader, I value mutual respect and collaboration, qualities that are essential when working with a board that brings together diverse perspectives. My history of fostering open dialogue and teamwork has led to positive outcomes in previous environments, and I believe this experience will be key in our future planning as we align our vision with our community’s needs.

When making decisions, I take a data-driven approach, which will allow me to evaluate our communication strategies and ensure our messages not only reach our audience but also connect with them on a meaningful level. This is important for building strong support for our initiatives and fostering a sense of belonging among parents and staff.

This data-driven approach extends to my ability to evaluate financial allocations and ensure we direct resources toward initiatives that truly support the success and well-being of our children. By having a solid understanding of budget management, I can advocate for spending that aligns with our strategic goals, making sure every dollar invested translates into real benefits for our children, staff, and community.

In closing, I am passionate about transforming our school into a vibrant centre for learning and community engagement, creating an educational environment that promotes equity, innovative programming, and well-being for our children.

Rebecca Yeates

Kia ora koutou,

I’m Rebecca Yeates, currently on the Board of Trustees at Ōtaika Valley school and pleased to be standing for re-election. I am a proud mum to Isla (10) and Brooklyn (7), long-time local of Maungakaramea, and passionate advocate for children, whānau, and community. For over five years now, I’ve had the joy of being part of the Ōtaika Valley School whānau, cheering from the sidelines, helping where I can, and watching our tamariki thrive.

With over 20 years in early childhood education, I have a deep understanding of child development and I’ve always believed in the magic of learning, laughter, and belonging. This year I’ve stepped into a new chapter working with Stand Tū Māia, where I’m humbled to walk alongside some of our most resilient tamariki and their whānau.

Alongside my husband Stephen and my lovely mum Linda, we live on our wee slice of paradise in Maungakaramea, complete with chickens, mud puddles, and the occasional wayward sheep.

I’m putting my hand up for the Board of Trustees because I’m deeply invested in the success of our kura – not just for my own children, but for every child who walks through those gates with wonder in their eyes.

I believe in strong partnerships, clear communication, and a good old-fashioned team effort. Let’s keep growing something beautiful together.

Ngā mihi nui,

Rebecca Yeates

Gareth Bourke

Hi there,

My name is Gareth Bourke, and I have had the pleasure of serving on the Ōtaika Valley Board of Trustees since 2020. Over the years, I have had the honor of collaborating with both present and past members who have greatly contributed to the school’s growth and development. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience, especially as we navigated through both the growth and challenges of the past five years.

My background is rooted in the building industry, where I hold trade qualifications in both joinery and building. This experience has given me a strong foundation and a unique perspective that I have brought to my role on the board. Working with the board and the school has allowed me to engage with the dedicated staff, enthusiastic students, and the supportive wider community.

Fifteen years ago, I made a significant career shift from the trade sector to the port industry. I am currently the Port Manager at Marsden Point for Qube Ports New Zealand, where I oversee a dynamic team of 120 staff members and 12 managers. My role in the port industry has further honed my leadership and management skills, which I have found to be invaluable in my contributions to the board.

Thank you for the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic community. I look forward to continuing my support for Ōtaika Valley and contributing to its ongoing success.

Best regards,

Gareth Bourke

Adam Clarke

I have a strong interest in continuing the positive outcomes for our OVS tamariki, as I have two children at the school (Years 4 and 2), with my youngest starting in 2027. I was previously the PTA treasurer for 2.5 years.

With over 15 years’ experience as an accountant, I’ve served on and advised both business and charitable boards, bringing expertise in financial management, process improvement, HR, property management, and youth work. I know how strong governance can make a real difference for staff, students, and whānau.

There are important matters in the school’s development that the Board will be involved with in the coming years, and I welcome the opportunity to play a role in this process.

Ngā mihi nui,

Adam

Ryan Stevens

Kia ora koutou,

My name is Ryan Stevens, and I’m pleased to put my name forward for re-election to the Board of Trustees at Ōtaika Valley School. I have had the privilege of serving on the board previously and would welcome the opportunity to continue supporting our school community.

I live locally and have strong ties to the school, with two of my children currently attending Otaika Valley, and my eldest having also completed their primary years here. I see firsthand the positive impact a strong, supportive learning environment can have on our tamariki, and I am passionate about helping to maintain and grow that standard.

In my professional life, I work as an industrial electrician at Golden Bay Cement, a role that demands practical problem-solving, teamwork, and a focus on safety and long-term planning—all skills I bring to the board table.

Being part of the board has been a rewarding way for me to give back to the community, ensuring that our school continues to be a nurturing and forward-thinking place for our children to learn and thrive. I’m committed to supporting our principal, staff, and fellow board members to make sound decisions that reflect the needs and aspirations of our families.

Thank you for your consideration and continued support.

Ngā mihi,

Ryan Stevens

Mulitcultural Week

What a fantastic week we’ve had celebrating Multicultural Week! The school was buzzing with vibrant energy, and it was a joy to see everyone embrace the diverse cultures within our community.

Yesterday’s colour run was an absolute highlight! It was a blast getting messy and colourful while running and dancing with friends. A massive thank you to Whaea Frances and Darcie for their amazing organization and for making the event so much fun.

On Wednesday, the shared kai was a delicious success. It was wonderful to share a meal together and taste all the different dishes brought in by our families.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made this such a memorable week. It’s truly special to see our school community come together to celebrate our differences.

Room 3 Writing:

Room 3 made recycled insects for Ag Day.

We made them with cardboard, to make the body. We could choose bubble wrap or no bubble wrap.  We painted the wings and body and let them dry.  We decorated the wings with buttons.  We coloured popsicle sticks for the legs.  We used lots of lids for the eyes with googly eyes.

From the Valley – PTA News
PTA SPOT – Thank You & Upcoming Events!

A Huge Thank You!
We’d like to extend a big thank you to all our wonderful parents and whānau who supported our recent school disco. Whether you helped out, donated baking, or brought your tamariki along, we truly appreciate your involvement.  Thanks to your support, the event was a great success; the kids had a great time and we raised valuable funds for our school!

️ Upcoming Raffle – Sponsors Needed
Our biggest fundraiser of the year is just around the corner, and we’re still looking for more generous sponsors to donate prizes. If you or your business can contribute in any way, please email pta@otaika.school.nz.

We’d also like to give a special shout-out and thank you to our sponsors so far:
Whangarei Aquatic Centre, Bocky Boo Gelato, Yovich Engineering, Harrisons Carpet Whangarei, 2 Ducks Contracting, Omak Meats, and North Financial – your support is greatly appreciated!

 Calendar Art Orders

A quick heads-up that calendar art orders will open next week! Orders must be placed by Wednesday 8th October. In an effort to keep purchase prices down, we’re taking a new approach this year. Samples of each product will be available to view at the office.

The kids have been busy creating some fantastic artwork — please talk to your child’s teacher if you’d like to view their piece. Alternatively, you’re welcome to provide us with a named piece of artwork (A4 or A3, landscape orientation). The less white space, the better! You will get the original artwork back.

 PTA Meeting – 6th October
Our next PTA meeting is happening on Monday 6th October at 3:20pm. Everyone is welcome – it’s a great chance to get involved, share ideas, and help support the school. Location to be confirmed closer to the date.

Ag Day – Parent Helpers Needed!
Ag Day is coming up soon, and we’ll need plenty of helping hands to make the day run smoothly.  Whether it’s setting up, providing baking, running stalls or providing face painting – there’s a role for everyone. Keep an eye out for more information soon, and please consider how you might be able to help on the day. Many of our usual volunteers are involved with animals on Ag Day, so without support we will not be able to offer the food stall or face painting.

Ngā mihi nui,

PTA Committee

Waiata Wānanga

We were so excited to be able to take seven of our senior students to Whangārei Primary School last Friday, to attend our Kāhui Ako Waiata Wānanga. Students from Maunu, Onerahi, WPS, OVS, Morningside and Whangārei Intermediate joined together to learn a number of waiata that are special to Te Tai Tokerau (Northland). These students will carry this knowledge back to their respective schools to share with all of their peers.

It was wonderful to be able to sing for the visiting principals, and great to hear that despite the nationwide discontinuation of Kāhui Ako, our schools will continue to collaborate and maintain this event in future. Another treat was to catch up with former OVS student, Kodin, who spoke on behalf of all of the visiting schools during our opening pōwhiri.

Ngā mihi nui to Desirei Davis (WPS) and Sally Shroff (Morningside) for hosting the wānanga, and to Darcie for coming along to support our students.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week)

Get ready, whānau! Next week is a special one as we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), marking the 50th year since it began.

Students will be challenged to find the meaning of 50 kupu (words) to celebrate the 50th anniversary. We encourage you to help them with this at home! At school, we’ll have a fantastic Te Reo Māori Funday full of fun activities to help us all learn and practice together.

Throughout the week, our teachers will be giving out tokens to students who are making an effort to use te reo and share new kupu with their friends. There will be prize draws for these tokens at the end of the week, as well as for the students who successfully complete the 50 kupu challenge! Let’s all get involved and make this a week to remember as we celebrate the beauty of our country’s native language.

A gentle reminder to please check the lost property, located on the washing line behind Room 4 and in the lost property bins.  Any unclaimed items will be donated over the school holidays, and some may be retained by the school to be used as spare clothing for other students.

Safety in the Sun – Term 4
With Term 4 just around the corner, we request that all students are to wear bucket/wide brimmed hats when they are outside during school hours.
