Term 4 – Week 3 – plus dates

Kia ora koutou,

2020 Ag and Flower Show Day

Feedback from the teachers and parents on the day was really positive for our very special annual Ag & Flower Show Day.  We felt it was a much more relaxed and enjoyable day than in the past.  This year instead of having teachers running extra games to occupy children after animal judging, the teachers were rostered on to help out in the food tent.  The positives for staff were being able to have much more time mingling with PTA parents, visiting parents and the children.  In a year with significantly less school/community face to face contact, this was seen as highly important.  Next year, we will run the water slide, sponge throwing, quad bike rides and food tent in a similar way.

Most importantly, during this challenging year, we had good numbers of students/families having either a goat, lamb or calf.  Otaika Valley School has strengthened the Ag and Flower Show tradition over the last 10 years, which could easily be lost.  For now, we are a semi-rural school, with mostly families from town.  Having a lamb/goat pen at school during Term 3 continues to offer many children with an experience with farm animals.  Thank you to the wonderful parents who support these traditions by either having an animal at home or bring them in daily during this time. You a true champions.  Well done to all of the children who have taken on the responsibility and pleasure of raising an animal, caring for its needs and bonding with it.  You do not forget this experience, it is with you for life.

Thank you to all children/teachers who worked very hard preparing the Flower Show and exhibits within your classrooms.  There are many lessons gained from the sustained focus on quality work.  Well done.

PTA THANK YOU

The Parent Teacher Group – were true champions of the school working behind the scenes preparing for either a level 1 or 2 food tent.  Feedback received was very positive, particularly from the children at assembly this week.  A big change for 2020 was sourcing commercially produced food for health and safety reasons and limited donations of food and preparation.  This took a lot of pressure off the PTA organising baked food donations from our community.  We are keen to stay with this model for 2021.

Donation thank you – a special thanks to the Morgan & Mawson families for the donated mince, and Nina for making all of the burger patties.  Over 100 burgers sold.  Yum.  The Mason’s donated 180 free range eggs.  The Roberts the lettuces.  The Greenall’s from Gilmour’s discounted cakes and donated some as well, and previously donated sausages for a school event.  We really appreciate your donations and support for all of the children at Otaika Valley School.   The PTA wanted to acknowledge the new families, particularly from Room 1 & 2 who donated their time to work in the food tent.  This made such a difference on the day.  Well done everyone.

Many families have been previously thanked for the very generous donations for the raffle with so many standout prizes.
